What to wear:
When photographing newborns, I do ask the parents to have black tops for some shots. Tank top, short sleeves, long sleeves, doesn’t really matter. Jeans are fine. For family pictures, you and your baby can wear whatever you like. I mostly shoot babies naked, in a diaper cover, or wrapped in a blanket. I bring diaper covers, wraps, hats, and headbands, but if there is something you have that you would love to use we certainly can do that. Brightly colored hats or blankets make great accents. I try to make the session as unique as possible by adding in special touches from your home. Cool pillows, grandma’s vintage chair, baby’s bedroom, mom and dad’s bed…whatever we can come up with.
This session is on baby’s schedule. I like to get shots of baby both alert and sleeping, but mostly sleeping. We’ll get what we can when we can. I like to start off the session with a baby with a full belly. Holding off on a feeding until right before I get there will save us a lot of waiting time. If your baby needs to eat in the middle, then the baby eats. That is why a session can take up to 3 hours. And I have yet to have a baby NOT pee on my backdrop! (FYI-it is washable!) Expect accidents to happen. It is helpful to have extra diapers, burp cloths, and wipes handy during the session.
Preparing for session:
It’s important that babies are warm during their session since they will be naked the majority of the time. Warming up the house by turning the thermostat up (in winter) before I get there is a huge help. Or even using a small space heater can be helpful. We don’t want diaper lines showing up in the images, so putting a loose diaper on your baby a couple of hours before the session will eliminate a lot of time editing. (which means you get to see your pictures sooner!)
I do photograph your hands up close, so you will want your nails to look nice if possible. Dads too!
If you have pets, please put them in another room or outside. If you have other children, I certainly will get some family shots and sibling shots, but it is extremely helpful to have another adult helping keep the siblings entertained and out of the way so that we are not distracted during our session. It makes for a much more relaxing session for everyone involved. When Mom is stressed, baby is stressed! During the session, I will need at least one adult to help out as an assistant. (spotter)
